Tom Altar was born on 22 June 1950 in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand. His family was from Mussoorie in Uttarakhand. His grandfather first came to India from Ohio in 1916. They came out of the way of the port of Madras and went to Lahore from there, and started living there. Tom Altar’s father was born in Sialkot. His grandfather remained in Pakistan and his father came to India with his family. After first residing in Allahabad, Jabalpur, Saharanpur, his family finally settled in Mussoorie in the year 1954.
