Soumitra Chatterjee was a Bengali film film and theater actor, poet and writer. In early life, he started taking part in school plays. Soumitra Chatterjee was born on 19 January 1935 in Krishna Nagar, Bengal during British India. His real name was Uttam Kumar.

Education of Soumitra Chatterjee

Soumitra and his family moved to Howrah where he studied at Howrah District School and Calcutta during his early years. Soumitra graduated from City College, Kolkata with honors in Bengali literature as a graduate student of the University of Calcutta. He did his MA in Bengali from Calcutta University. While still a student, he learned acting under the famous actor-director of Bengali theater, Ahindra Chaudhary.

Career of Soumitra Chatterjee

Soumitra started his career working as an announcer at All India Radio, Saumitra has also worked with Satyajit Ray for a long time. He has acted in 14 films of Satyajit Ray. He started his career in 1959 with Satyajit Ray’s film ‘Apur Sansar’.

After this, he also acted in Satyajit Ray’s films Devi Charulata and Ghare Byre. The pairing of filmmaker Satyajit Ray and actor Soumitra Chatterjee was compared to that of Hollywood’s famous actor-director Jodi Akira Kurosova-Toshiro Mifune and Markello Mastroianni-Federico Felino. Soumitra also worked with Satyajit Ray, along with many internationally acclaimed directors including Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha and Tarun Mazumdar. Chatterjee has also worked with renowned directors such as Aparna Sen, Gautam Ghosh and Rituparno Ghosh. He worked in more than 250 films in a career of six decades.
