In this list, Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia (69) has been placed second while Jathedar Singh Sahib Giani Gurbachan Singh, the current head of Shri Akal Takht Sahib has been placed third. Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has been declared the fourth most powerful Sikh.
Is Manmohan really a strong Sikh?
A survey shows that when Sonia Gandhi rejected Manmohan Singh, the former finance minister, to this post in 2004, Sonia Gandhi rejected the post of Prime Minister, then a wave of happiness ran in the whole country. Especially Punjab was very proud that a leader of his place has become the Prime Minister of the country.
The effect of Manmohan Singh becoming Prime Minister was also seen as a good performance of the Congress in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections in Punjab. The Congress had won eight of the 13 Lok Sabha seats in the state. But after 2009, the situation changed completely. The continuous corruption in the UPA government had completely reduced Manmohan Singh’s popularity. This was the reason that the Congress had to face defeat in the 2012 assembly elections in Punjab.
Experts believe that the biggest reason for Sikh disenchantment with Manmohan Singh is that there has been a perception among the people that he is the Prime Minister to say but he has nothing in his hand and he has to make every decision by asking Sonia Gandhi is. Perhaps the same thing strikes Sikhs.
