Who Was Mehmood?
Mehmood Ali (29 September 1932 – 23 July 2004), popularly known simply as Mehmood, was an Indian actor, singer, director and producer. Today the place of comedians in Hindi films is very difficult to create. Today, we see heroes in comedy-based films as obscene and double-joking, but once upon a time, comic roles were made in the film and they were played very politely. Artists like Johnny Walker, Mahmood gave new dimensions to comedy. Today is the birthday of actor Mahmood whom we know for his comedic work.
The name of Mahmood is the first among the comedians who have brought the comedian’s stature closer to the hero in Hindi films, who spread the thousands of colors in the comedian and made the audience laugh all the time. In Hindi films, Mahmood made a place as a comedian at a time when humor was not given prominence. The protagonists also seemed to be ineffective in front of Mahmud, who created a new definition of comedy and established humor as an important element of the film.
Life of Mahmood
Mahmood, son of actor Mumtaz Ali, was born on September 29, 1932. His full name was Mahmood Ali. He was the second of eight children of his parents. One of her sisters, Meenu Mumtaz, has also been a famous actress in Hindi films. His father Mumtaz Ali used to work in Bombay Talkies Studio.
Since childhood, Mahmud had a tendency towards acting. He wanted to become an actor.
Mehmood’s early career
On the recommendation of his father, Mahmud got the opportunity to play the childhood role of actor Ashok Kumar in the Bombay Talkies film Kismet released in the year 1943. After this, Mahmud started working as a driver with filmmaker Gyan Mukherjee. He used to get the opportunity to go to the studio every day on this excuse. There he could see the artists up close. After this, Mahmud composed lyricists Bharat Vyas, Raja Mehndi Ali Khan and producer P.L. Worked as a driver at Santoshi too.
Mehmood’s first film
The star of Mahmood’s fortune shone when a junior artist in front of actress Madhubala failed to communicate even after ten consecutive retakes during the shooting of a film. After this, this dialogue was given to Mahmud to speak, which he made OK in one go without retake. In lieu of this dialogue, Mahmud received a hundred rupees as remuneration. As a driver, he used to get only 75 rupees a month. After this, Mehmood gave up the driver and registered his name in the Junior Artists Association. With this, started struggling to get work in films. As a junior artist, Mahmood did small roles in films like “Do Bigha Zameen”, “Jagriti”, “CID” and “Pyaasa”.
In the film Parvarish, released in the year 1958, Mahmood got a good role for the first time. In this, he played the role of Raj Kapoor’s brother. This was followed by M.V. In Prasad’s “in-laws”, Mahmood got recognition in the film industry as a comedian. After this, the pair of Mahmood and Shobha Khote worked in many films including “Stubborn” and “Love in Tokyo”.
The pairing was well received by the audience along with Shobha Khote of Mahmood, who made tremendous comedies in films like Sasural, Zindagi, Gumnaam, Pyar Kye Ja, Love in Tokyo, Aankhen Do Phool, Dil Tera Deewana.

Comedian mehmood
To avoid the uniformity in his character, Mahmood also did many other types of roles. In these films, the name of “Neighbors” comes first among them. In this, Mahmud played a negative role and managed to rob the applause of the audience. Padosan created a new history of musical comedy by playing the role of South Indian music teacher in the film. There were also legendary artists like Kishore Kumar and Sunil Dutt in the neighborhood. “Padosan” is counted among the best comedy films of the Hindi cine world.
“Main Sundar Hoon”, “Kunvara Bap”, “Jini Aur Johny” and “Sabse Bada Rupaiya” are among his important films. Mahmood also ventured into direction of direction with the “Bhoot Bungalow” screened in 1965. Directed the film “Kunvara Bap” in 1974. His films as a filmmaker include Chhote “Nawab”, “Bhoot Bangla”, “Padosan”, “Bombay to Goa”, “Dushman Duniya Ka”, “Biggest Rupaiya” etc. He also played playback in many films.

Mahmood, who worked as an actor, director, storyteller and producer, made his last film “Dushman Duniya Ka” in 1996 with the current King Shahrukh Khan of Bollywood but he might not understand the flavor of the audience and the film box office But failed In terms of acting, he last worked in the film “Andaz Apna Apna”.
In the last days of his life, Mahmood’s health deteriorated. He went to the US for treatment where he died on 23 July 2004. This great artist who laughed the world by laughing and went away from this world with great silence in the wake of sleep.
