Utpal Dutt was born on March 29, 1929 in a Hindu family in Barisal, East Bengal (British India). His father’s name was Girijaranjan Dutt, in the year 1960, Utpal Dutt married theater and film actress Shobha Sen. The daughter of Utpal Dutt and Shobha Sen is named Doctor Bishnupriya. They are his only child.

Education
Utpal Dutt’s father sent him to Kolkata for studies. Utpal ji completed the matriculation examination in 1945 and then in 1949 received a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from ‘St. Xavier’s College’, Kolkata.
Career
In 1940 Utpal Dutt joined the English theater and started acting. Utpal ji was very fond of Shakespearean literature. During this time he staged several plays in India and Pakistan with the theater company. He received a lot of accolades from the play ‘Othello’. After this Utpal ji moved from English to Bengali drama. After 1950, he joined a production company and thus began his career with Bengali films. His love of theater continued with Bengali films. During this time, he not only directed many plays but also did writing work. His plays on Bengali politics have also given rise to controversy at times.
As a comedian
In 1950, the famous filmmaker Madhu Bose gave him the lead role in his film ‘Michael Madhusudhan’, which was well appreciated. After this Utpal Dutt also acted in Satyajit Ray’s films. Utpal Dutt was known as a great comedian in Hindi cinema. Although he acted in very few films. ‘Guddi’, ‘Golmaal’, ‘Soft-hot’, ‘Colorless’ and ‘Shoukiin’.
