Sun Pharma is India’s largest pharma company. Sun Pharma starts in Gujarat Wholesale drug dealer Dilip Shanghvi did it in 1972 with five products for a mere ten thousand rupees. Success Story of Sun Pharma founder Dilip Shanghvi
Dilip Shanghvi was born on 1 October 1955 in Amreli, Gujarat. His father Shantilal Sanghvi was a wholesale drug dealer. Dileep did his schooling from JJ Ajmera School and graduated in Commerce from University of Calcutta. After finishing his studies, he started working in his father’s business. During this time, he thought of forming his own pharmaceutical company.

In 1982, he borrowed ten thousand rupees from his father and laid the foundation of Sun Pharma. Sun Pharma was launched with just two people marketing team and five products. Dilip Shanghvi and his team worked hard to grow the company and established their own manufacturing unit in the 1990s. During this time, he also launched some more new products.
Gradually, Sun Pharma’s business grew and they started exporting in neighboring countries as well. In 1919, he also set up a production plant in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. By this time Sun Pharma had become a multinational company. Sun Pharma bought the loss-making American company Carco Laboratories and reached the US. In 2016, Sun Pharma merged Ranbaxy Laboratories with the company by making it the largest pharma company in the country.

He has also received many honors and awards for his success in business. Dilip Shanghvi received the ‘CNN-IBN Indian of the Year’ – Business category award in 2011. Along with this, the Government of India has also honored him with Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honor of the country, in 2010.
